Fremantle is a bustling port city - its football team has an anchor as its symbol. And way back in the 1850s - that's old for European Oz - locals started the Fremantle Market which is still going today. There are more than 150 stalls so if you're in or around Perth, head on down to Freeo and their splendid historical market.
Sydney is Australia’s biggest and oldest city and like all major towns is dotted with wonderful markets. The best known is Paddington Market which is close to Chinatown in Haymarket. Like all good flea markets, everything is for sale and bargains are there for the taking. You’ll find a huge array of goods from flowers to fruit to fancy frilly fashions.
Darwin in the Top End is an exception to the wonderful weather being a feature of Aussie markets. In fact the Big Wet (rainy season) means the markets held at sunset by the stunning Mindil Beach only operate from May to October. That’s when the weather is superb and that’s when the tropical food and entertainment at sunset are at their best.
In Melbourne the Queen Victoria Market is either busy or very busy. It sells everything including cheese, shoes, pets, pate, shirts and more fruit and veg than you can poke a pineapple at. It has the advantages of being open on weekends and several week days and being close to city hotels and inner suburbs. It’s big and worth a visit just as a tourist attraction in itself.
There are many Australian markets known only to the locals. They are often open only once a week or even once a month. They have stallholders who are passionate about their home grown apples, flowers, honey or bread. Gleadell Street Market in Richmond, Victoria is a weekly market where a busy street is closed for shoppers.
