Kalgoorlie sits on the richest square mile of gold mining soil in the world and is affectionately known as the Golden Mile. This gold rush boom town sits on the edge of the world’s largest open cut gold mine and it still yields plenty, up to 850,000 ounces of gold annually.
Because Kalgoorlie was built on gold the township is full of beautiful ornate architecture with wide spacious streets to stroll down. Kalgoorlie is 600km east of Perth.

Boulder Market day comes alive with various stalls and local crafts including jewellery, wooden toys, handmade doll?s, crystals, clothes, second-hand goods, teddy bears, baked goods including jams, biscuits and cakes and a variety of framed pictures and books are all available. Many special events, including music and cultural festivals are hosted on Market Day weekends.
Golden Mile Art Exhibition
A permanent exhibition in the upstairs gallery of Boulder Town Hall with works by local artists. (08 9093 3283).
This flora and fauna reserve has native wildlife as well as a model of a Bavarian Castle. Next to the park is the Arboretum, which has a bird watching walking trails. Lyall Street
This infamous red light area serviced the hard working miners from the very early gold rush days. They started over a century ago with tents and then moved up market to tin sheds.
There is plenty of gold nuggets here, but unfortunately they are only replicas, but they do show just how large some of the gold chunks were. There is also a large collection of mineral and ore specimens. Cassidy street (08 9088 6001).
Mining Hall of Fame
Everything you need to know about mining is here, there are interactive displays on post and modern mining styles. You can see an underground mine, pan for gold the old fashioned way and pour over lots of mining memorabilia. Broad Arrow Road (08 9026 2700).
Mt Charlotte Reservoir
The reservoir is the water source for Kalgoorlie and the lookout provides a good view over the town.
Museum of the Goldfields
There are displays here of life in the goldfields in the early days. Highlights are the gold in the basement and and a collection of gold jewelry, miner’s style, from the early days. 17 Hannan Street (08 9021 8533).
Super Pit Lookout
Be awe inspired by the workings of a modern open cut mine, as a work in progress. But, beware the lookout is closed when the mine delivers it’s daily blast.The lookout is located in Boulder off the Goldfields highway. Outram Street.
Royal Flying Doctor Service Kalgoorlie Visitor Centre is located at the Kalgoorlie Airport and offers guided tours which inform you about the beginnings of the service, the history to date including stories of some of its amazing and amusing characters. This is a great attraction to visit whilst on your travels. There are full facilities including wheelchair access. Paula Duggan
Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame – Located in Kalgoorlie W.A. a visit here will see you travel 36 metres underground with your guide, a retired miner. You will visit the tunnels where men once toiled with pick and shovel to make a living. Once back on the surface you can pan for gold and see a gold pouring demonstration. Well worth a visit. Goldfields War Museum – Whilst in Kalgoorlie visit the Goldfields War Museum which houses a large collection of wartime items most of which have been donated by members of the local community. Spending a few hours here will see you exploring the diver’s displays and learning of war time experiences and sacrifices of our men and women. The kids will enjoy a photo dressed in camouflage gear to show their friends back home. Paula Duggan
